In March of 2020, high school music students across the state and country had their seasons halted due to school closures related to COVID-19. Over the weekend, Pella High School celebrated the return of the band, choir, and orchestra programs this academic year during the two-night Carnaby Club Friday and Saturday. Masked-up crowds were welcomed to the Pella High School gymnasium to watch Pella Jazz I, Acapella Show Choir, and Orchestra students perform, as well as Bravo Show Choir, the Pella Jazz Ensemble, and several smaller solos, duets, and group performances from all three departments. Those who missed the music over the weekend can watch Pella Jazz I and Acapella perform this Friday night on the Tulip Toren during Feesthouden festivities at Tulip Time, and smaller “pop-up” performances from the students throughout the celebration. Pella High Schools award-winning music departments are coming together to celebrate the past year of band, orchestra, and choir. The second night of Carnaby Club will be held this evening at 7 p.m. in the Pella High School gym, after a first round of ensemble and large group performances Friday. Pella High School’s award-winning band, orchestra, and choir departments are bringing back a showcase of the music departments this weekend with the returning Carnaby Club. Students from all three groups will perform special selections, including Pella Jazz I and Acapella Show Choir, on Friday, April 30th and Saturday, May 1st at 7 p.m. in the Pella High School East Gymnasium. Soloists and small groups will also be featured. Tickets cost $5 and are open to the public, with face masks required throughout the performances. ....
Pella High School Jazz I is making the most of the 2020-21 school year, despite many traditional events they perform and compete at being shuttered or significantly altered. This week would have marked the Iowa Jazz Championships, and for two years in a row, the event has been cancelled due to COVID-19. Juniors Dora Roorda and Alexa Gaylor were among eight Pella High students chosen for All-State recognition from the Iowa Jazz Educators of Iowa, and both say they are still enjoying playing music with their friends and continuing the tradition of excellence in the ensemble. Pella High School music students still have concerts scheduled to end the academic year, as Jazz I performs at the annual Carnaby Club on April 30th and May 1st; shares the stage with Acapella Show Choir on Friday, May 7th, at the 86th Tulip Time Festival. The Pella High School Concert Band will perform on Friday, April 23rd. ....
