Weeks after Democrats took control of Congress and the White House, a Black lawmaker is making a renewed push for a national commission to examine the impact of slavery and reparations for descendants of millions of enslaved Africans.
Rep. Shelia Jackson Lee, D-Texas, announced the reintroduction of H.R. 40 to create the reparations commission last month, and next week the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties is set to hear testimony on the bill.
H.R. 40 has a long history in the House, championed for decades by the late Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., and now by Lee. ....

Utah School Reverses Decision To Allow Parents To Opt Their Children Out Of Black History Month Curriculum
While some parents are now praising the school for reversing its decision, others are chastising it for having created the plan in the first place.

Maria Montessori Academy, a charter school in Utah that initially gave students the option to opt-out of Black History Month, has changed its plans after receiving nationwide backlash.
Micah Hirokawa, director of the school in North Ogden, Utah, announced the latest decision in a statement to The Hill, saying that all students are now participating in the curriculum and there will not be an option to skip the lesson in the future.  ....

ANN ARBOR, MI Black History Month events in the Ann Arbor-area are going virtual this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
But there is a plethora of ways to engage in activities celebrating Black culture all month long, such as panels, film screenings, games and more. All are open to the public.

Several events are running all month at the library, from book discussions to virtual chats, including celebrating prominent Black figures, such as Carter Woodson, who is known as the “Father of Black History;” Ida B. Wells; Madam C.J. Walker; Althea Gibson; Bayard Rustin and Billie Holiday. ....
