WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University’s Center for Commercial Agriculture will host a free webinar regarding the status of carbon markets and implications and possibilities for agricultural producers at 12:30 p.m. (ET) Thursday, June 24.
The webinar will specifically focus on opportunities and challenges of the carbon markets in U.S. agriculture for row crop producers.
“Many agricultural producers are questioning the industry’s potential role in carbon sequestration right now,” said James Mintert, professor and director of the Center for Commercial Agriculture. “During this webinar, Nathanael Thompson, Carson Reeling and I will answer some of the questions on producers’ minds and take a look at some of the opportunities for row crop producers interested in carbon sequestration on their farmland. Questions about agriculture’s potential role in carbon sequestration are on many ag producers’ minds these days. Purdue agriculture economists Carson Reeling, Nathanael Thompson and James Mintert will discuss the opportunities and challenges of the carbon markets in U.S. agriculture for row crop producers during a webinar on Thursday, June 24th at 12:30 p.m. EDT.

How carbon may become another crop for farmers

among frustrated farmers greeted former Rep. Bob Inglis (R-SC) at a National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) meeting in the mid-2010s.
Inglis was then a rarity among Republican legislators. He made his case for market-based solutions to mitigate the impact of human-influenced climate change.
On that day, though, not many farmers wanted to hear it.  
“You could just feel the tension in the room, the feeling that this guy was full of it,” recalls Brandon Hunnicutt, a Giltner, Nebraska, farmer, who is involved with several NCGA boards.
Many farmers skeptically view the concept of climate change. This skepticism, though, may be as much rooted in fear of government control as distrust in climate science, says Ben Riensche, a Jesup, Iowa, farmer.  ....
