The Hokonui Rūnanga has changed its position on the Gore District Council’s proposal to build a bridge across the Mataura River, and now has adopted a neutral position. The Rūnanga had entered a submission opposing the council’s resource consent application to build the pedestrian and cycleway bridge because the council did not consult with it before announcing its plans. In June, the council announced plans for the $3.7 million bridge to carry water pipes across the river, north of the existing traffic bridge, as part of a $10.8m upgrade of its East Gore water treatment plant. ....

At a meeting last week, the council voted to include $340,000 of funding for stage two of the development in the council’s Long Term Plan. It will be out for consultation in March. Santa and his helpers wave to the crowds at Gore Santa Parade and Christmas in the Park. One float celebrated a Kiwiana Christmas, but its members may have been the only ones wearing shorts at Gore’s Santa Parade and Christmas in the Park on Sunday. The crowds turned up in jackets and woolly hats, but the weather didn’t dampen the festive spirits of those that waited for Santa to arrive, with one crowd member commenting that it was a “really happy vibe’’ on Main St. And the wind dropped and the sun came out just long enough for the 40 floats to do a lap of the town before families headed to the Gore Gardens, where there was a bit more shelter amongst the trees and rhododendrons, for the Christmas in the Park concert. ....
