Municipal taxes are going up in Quesnel SHARE ON: Canadian currency. (Pixabay) Quesnel City Council has unanimously approved the first three readings of the 2021 Tax Rate Bylaw and the bottom line is taxes will be going up. Director of Finance Kari Bolton went over what the impact will be on the average homeowner at Tuesday night’s meeting. “The average residence in Quesnel valued at $229,367 will see an increase of $33.53 in the municipal tax portion of their property tax invoice, or $14.62 per 100 thousand.” Bolton went on to say that commercial businesses will see an increase of $52.50 per 100 thousand worth of assessment, plus there could be some added “sticker shock” for businesses because of the school tax rate, which the city collects for the province. ....

Residents were originally looking at a 4.6 percent increase when Council’s Financial Sustainability and Audit Committee took its first swing at the operating budget back in February, but that figure has now been reduced to 2.5 percent. Director of Finance Kari Bolton, speaking at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, noted that the committee had made some adjustments based on the feedback that it heard. -Cutting training in 2021 by $50,000 due to the ongoing effects of COVID-19 and limited travel ....

Kari Bolton is the Director of Finance… “Our budget was one million, 119 thousand. We ended up spending 1, 312 thousand, so we were over budget by 193 thousand but this year. Bolton says a big chunk of that will be paid for with the new reserve that they brought in… “This year Council did approve the collecting of a snow levy reserve just to have money when we go over budget, and that levy was 165 thousand so it covers most of the overage.” ....
