Two amateur computer coders yesterday pleaded guilty to “stirring up trouble and picking quarrels” in a case that highlighted a growing Chinese government crackdown on online activity.

In court, prosecutors zeroed in on 2049bbs, the forum accompanying the archive. ....

Two Chinese activists who kept an online repository of banned articles on the coronavirus pandemic stood trial in Beijing on Tuesday, while a journalist was attacked by unidentified thugs in Hong Kong.

According to Chen Mei s brother, Chen Kun, their mother and Cai Wei s father were allowed to attend the trial, which lasted around 100 minutes.
The pair were accused in the indictment of posting around 600 articles to their Terminus2049 page on Github, creating a repository of censored and deleted articles about the early weeks of the pandemic in China, according to the indictment against them. ....

Amateur coders admit to crime of 'stirring up trouble' in case highlighting China's online control

The case was tried at Wenyuhe People’s Court in the northeastern outskirts of Beijing. The court said sentencing would come at a later date.
The charge “stirring up trouble and picking quarrels” is a catch-all charge often used for politically sensitive cases.
Chen’s mother, who travelled from northwestern Shaanxi province to attend the hearing, said her son wore a full-body medical protective suit and had his hands cuffed and feet shackled. She could tell which one was her son, as he is shorter than Cai, but was unable to make eye contact. The only time her son spoke was to plead guilty, she said. ....
