by Mark McDermott Perhaps no event rang truer to recently retired City Controller Henry Mitzner’s most famed City Hall axiom than the adopted 2021-22 fiscal year budget, which projects the City of Manhattan Beach emerging from an economically devastating time with its economic health somehow better than ever. “When it’s bad out there, it’s good here,” Mitzner always said. “And when it’s good out there, it’s great here.” The City Council unanimously adopted a budget at its last meeting in June that is theoretically projected to have a $335,000 surplus, but in reality, after $8.4 million in American Rescue Plan revenues and $1.5 million in other pandemic relief funds filter in over the next year, will more likely show a much larger surplus. Photo courtesy City of Manhattan Beach The City of Manhattan Beach Thursday morning announced the appointment of Michael Lang as its new fire chief. “I am humbled and honored to be trusted with the responsibility of leading the Manhattan Beach Fire Department,” said Chief Lang. “I am grateful for the support of the City Manager and City Council and their confidence in my ability to maintain the highest standards of excellence and professionalism that the Manhattan Beach Fire Department exemplifies.” Fire Chief Lang served the City of Arcadia for 21 years, moving his way up through the ranks from a Firefighter/Paramedic, Fire Captain, Battalion Chief and Deputy Fire Chief before his appointment to Fire Chief in 2016. In his time at the City of Arcadia, Chief Lang led a team of 60 personnel overseeing all fire operations including administration, training, fire prevention, emergency response and fire suppression. ....
