Black churches in Fayetteville serve as hub for community


From the civil rights movement of the 1960s to today, the church has served as more than just a place of worship to members of the Black community. 
It s just been the gathering place for getting people informed in politics, getting people informed in life opportunities in general, said the Rev. Donna Thompson of John Wesley United Methodist Church.  So, it s been like the hub of the community where people receive help for food and assistance for paying utilities and advice if they need unemployment .. so it s really the hub of the community.   
Black churches all over Fayetteville have served as these kinds of gathering places for members of the Black community.  ....

Ruth's 1st home run, Lafayette visit part of rich Fayetteville history


It’s where Babe Ruth hit his first home run.
It’s where the state legislators ratified the U.S. Constitution.
It’s where Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette visited.
“We’re just so rich in history that it’s really hard to limit it and talk about a few things,” said city historian Bruce Daws.
Today, a marker just north of Gillespie Street’s intersection with Southern Avenue points out the spot where George Herman “Babe” Ruth hit his first home run March 7, 1914.
Ruth would belt his first home run as a professional and earn the famous moniker “Babe  during a month-long visit here for spring training in 1914. ....
