Campo Fire in Calaveras County Sonora, CA – California’s dry conditions and temperatures already reaching into the ’90s has CAL Fire Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit (TCU) bracing for a possible catastrophic wildland fire season. The CAL Fire chart below shows a significant increase in the number of wildfires in the state and on federal lands. The number jumped from 1,065 in 2020 to 1,788 this year, a hike of 723 fires. Even more striking is the spike in acres burned, a nearly 700% increase over last year at this time. Sunday Wildfire In Big Basin Redwoods State Park Kicks Off Another Potentially Horrible Fire Season Windy and dry conditions over the weekend led to a very early Red Flag Warning being called in the North Bay, and two small brush fires around the Bay Area. But a slightly more significant fire that actually got named broke out on Sunday in the CZU Lightning Complex burn zone, inside Big Basin Redwoods State Park. Dubbed the Basin Fire, the wildfire began shortly after noon on Sunday, and by 2 p.m. Cal Fire CZU said that it was being kept at under an acre. But as the Chronicle reports, the fire continued to grow before it was fully contained Sunday night, and scorched a total of seven acres in the area of Hihn Hammond Truck Trail, in the Santa Cruz Mountains. ....
Campo Fire in Calaveras County Campo Seco, CA Officials have gained 100-percent containment on the first major vegetation of the year in the CAL Fire Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit. The Campo Fire ignited on April 29 in the 5100 block of Buckboard Lane in the Campo Seco area of Calaveras County. It was earlier determined to be caused by an escaped debris burn. The fire forced the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office to initially issue an evacuation order for communities near the fire. CAL Fire reports that the blaze is now fully contained at 160 acres. Crews were on the scene overnight patrolling the area and looking for any hotspots within the containment lines. ....

This update comes even as windy conditions and warm temperatures continue into Monday. Cal Fire said in their latest update on Facebook that firefighters will continue working throughout the day to achieve full containment. The fire started in the area of Buckboard Lane and Campo Seco Road in Calaveras County on the afternoon of Thursday, April 29, growing to 150 acres by the end of the day.
