The insurgents, who displaced majority residents of the town, were also said to have taken to preaching jihadist sermons to the few remaining people, mostly aged men and women, while also giving cash to them. Gambo Abdullahi, an indigene of Geidam residing in Damaturu, said the town was still being occupied by the insurgents, while the Nigerian army troops were restricted to the western area. The move was said to be part of activities to mark the United Nations’ World Interfaith Week. Pastor Johanna Buru, one of the promoters, and also the General Overseer of Christ Evangelical and Life Intervention Ministry, Kaduna, said some Muslims clerics and worshippers from across the country would be invited to attend the prayer and break fasting in the church with their Christian brethren.
