Abu Dhabi's Warehouse421 to offer new open calls and artist grants, including one up to Dh75,000


Mina Zayed, Abu Dhabi, has today announced a major new five-year plan for public programming.
The team is taking a radical step in a new direction, saying it will generate about 80 per cent of its programming using the results of new training schemes
and grants
. This includes five open calls, which will offer mid-career artists and curators across the Menasa region a chance to improve their work.
“We asked ourselves, How we can build an infrastructure to raise capabilities locally and regionally? ” says Faisal Al Hassan, general manager
of Warehouse421. “We widened the scope of our partnerships

Fire Station and VCUarts Qatar begin women-led lecture series

Doha: The Fire Station: Artist in Residence and the Painting and Printmaking Department at VCUarts Qatar have kicked off a virtual lecture series titled ‘Decolonizing Art Narratives: Arab Women Artists Today’ in which 14 women artists are coming together to explore gender, politics, colonialism, culture and identity.
The year-long academic lecture series features a dynamic group of Arab female artists and practitioners across various disciplines and locales in the Middle East who will revisit and consider how best to reshape existing narratives. 
Khalifa Al Obaidly, Director, Fire Station, said: “The Fire Station is honoured to partner with VCUarts Qatar to present this pertinent lecture series. The series provides a platform for some of the region’s most inspirational female artists to collectively discuss what it means to be an artist in the context of modern societal norms and challenges.” ....

In connection with the exhibition High Dam: Modern Pyramid by Ala Younis at VI PER, Ala Younis will present her lecture High Dam (Red Rose). In conversation with the exhibition’s curator Rado Ištok she will also present her new body of work commissioned for the exhibition. High Dam (Red Rose) focuses on two versions of a feature film by the Egyptian film director Youssef Chahine which was commissioned as the first UAR and USSR coproduction to promote the construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s. The artist will present clips from the released film compared to the rejected version, as well as other material that exposes the making of regimes of trut ....

In Jordan, a Painter Forges Artful Collaborations


When Khaldoun Hijazin returned to his native Jordan in 2014 after earning his M.F.A. from Tufts, his immediate future was mapped out: teaching at the University of Jordan’s School of Arts and Design and building a career as a visual artist and cultural practitioner.
But he also yearned to share the inspiration he’d found at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts (SMFA), where his originality flourished amid a steady and lively exchange of ideas. Not long after returning home, he was developing collaborative projects that brought new attention to the contemporary visual arts, fostering Jordanian artists and underscoring how they respond to the complex cultural and sociopolitical challenges facing their homeland and the wider Middle East.  ....
