Playwright David Atfield. IN a welcome piece of news for Canberra playwriting, David Atfield has been selected to be in residence at Canberra Theatre Centre during August, working on his new play, “Chiaroscuro” as part of the theatre’s New Works program. “Chiaroscuro” will follow the story of notorious Italian artist Caravaggio as he paints a masterpiece from his studio in late-renaissance Italy, exploring themes of religion, queerness and the life of an artist. FOR people concerned that not having read the Harry Potter books will affect their enjoyment of “Potted Potter”, don’t worry. Created by Daniel Clarkson and Jeff Turner, and directed by Daniel Clarkson, “Potted Potter” is back in Canberra for a second season and this crazy show takes on the challenge of condensing all seven very big books of the Harry Potter series into 70 minutes. Impossible? Well, yes it is of course but that doesn’t stop the two very busy New Zealand actors, Adam Brown and Tama Jarman, from giving it their best shot and entertaining the audience in the process. ....

Reviewed by LEN POWER. IF you can make a musical out of “American Psycho”, you can make a musical out of anything. Based on the best-selling and controversial 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis, it focuses on a young, handsome and wealthy investment banker, Patrick Bateman, in New York City during the Wall Street boom of the 1980s. This man also happens to be a serial killer. While the book gave shockingly detailed descriptions of the young killer’s murderous actions, the musical focuses more on life in the prosperous decade that enabled young, successful people like Bateman to indulge in chic restaurants, exclusive clubs and designer labels. ....
