(Representative Image) In a serious development, following Rajasthan, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, the states of Gujarat and Haryana have also confirmed that they have been hit by avian influenza (bird flu), reports Times of India. The samples taken from two poultry farms in Haryana s Panchkula district and of migratory birds from Gujarat s Junagarh district have tested positive for the H5N8 virus which causes the disease. The samples were tested at Bopal-based ICAR-National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases (ICAR-NIHSAD). ....
Bird flu scare In recent developments around the scare of avian influenza or bird blue, a Bhopal based laboratory confirmed that 4,37,000 birds have died in Haryana. Until now, Centre has confirmed bird blu in 6 states- Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The Centre on Friday held a meeting with States and Union Territories to understand the status of the outbreak of bird flu. Steps and measures to control the spread of the same were also discussed during the meeting. An official statement read that so far, the disease had been confirmed in 6 states, the culling operations had been completed in the two affected districts of Kerala and the disinfection process was underway. ....

While speaking to media, the Animal Husbandry & Dairying Fisheries Minister said that samples from different poultry farms were sent to Bhopal following the unusual death of more than four lakh chickens in a month.
