. In February, developer Countryside put forward plans to demolish the old Magnet Leisure Centre in favour of five apartment blocks, ranging from five to 11-storeys. According to the plans, 130 homes will be affordable. A wave of objections and a petition have come forward urging the developers to rethink the designs, fearing the tall buildings will overshadow the existing community, overdevelopment of the site, and a surge in traffic. The Royal Borough’s housing department are against this scheme, known as St Clouds Way, for not including affordable rent into the affordable housing mix. They state it “does not adequately meet local housing needs,” and there should be a tenure split of 45 per cent social rent, 35 per cent affordable rent, and 20 per cent shared ownership in the scheme. ....
