Yang Hongwei, inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of East China s Shandong province, has been learning how to make kites from her grandfather Yang Tongke since 1982.
She had been making and flying kites in Beijing and Shenzhen, before returning home to Yangjiabu village, or Yang family village, in Weifang city, where she began focusing on the craft in 1992.
She developed the innovative approach of combining Chinese New Year paintings with kite making. The kites she creates are beautiful and also fly very well. ....

GUJRANWALA: A man was electrocuted while catching a stray kite in Shahzada Shaheed Colony on Saturday.
Ahmad Daud, 50, was trying to catch a stray kite when its chemical string fell on electric wires and he suffered a fatal electric shock and died on the spot.
Steps to be taken to combat price hike: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sohail Khawaja Saturday said all possible measures would be taken to combat price hike of essential commodities especially wheat flour, sugar, pulses and vegetables. Addressing a meeting at his office, the DC said that some 16 Ramazan Bazaars had been established at different areas for the relief of the people and all essential food commodities would be easily available in the bazaars at fixed rates. Jessica Gerger, who s the President of Friends of Kororoit Creek, said the group collected hundreds of kites and string from Sunshine West s Buckingham Reserve on Monday, after a kite festival was held nearby at the weekend.
We gathered as much as we could and compressed it all down and stuffed it into the back of our station wagon, and it was an entire station wagon load, she said.
I think part of the festival was releasing the kites. I think people don t quite think that through, that when you let something go, it s going to come down somewhere. ....
