Themes for Falling Down Stairs (Self-released) This album, available on 180gm vinyl, CD, cassette and digital, was released back in October, but it just recently entered my consciousness, and since the entrance was an impressive one, here we are and here it is. This looks to be Lee’s first record, but it’s obvious he’s accumulated experience along the way, as the compositions are his, and he plays a variety of (often unusual) instruments together with leading a large band that’s immersed in a neo-lounge jazz/ soundtrack mode (of a sort) that’s a bit like a puree of Henry Mancini, Nino Rota, Combustible Edison, and Angelo Badalamenti, with Mike Patton and John Zorn giving slow nods of approval from the sidelines. 2020. A tough year by nearly any measure. And one which saw music culture take a serious hit, not only in the ability to produce it, but especially in arguably music’s most impactful realm - performing it live with and for people. The effects these challenges have posed this year to musicians and to music culture have definitely taken their toll on the amount of music not just being performed, but being produced in general, with a litany of different works having been or still being delayed in their production and release. ....

Along with R.E.M. and the B-52âs, the most significant group to come out of the Athens, Georgia, scene would be Pylon. The Pylon Box represents their music well.

With great and due respect to R.E.M. – and, to a lesser extent, the B-52’s – there was a lot more significant musical activity going on in and around Athens, Georgia in the 1980s. For those who weren’t there, a 1987 documentary film,
Athens, GA: Inside/Out offered a glimpse into the college town’s musical riches. Intriguing bands like Time Toy and Kilkenny Cats didn’t make the leap into major-label status, but a few did make a mark outside the city, including Love Tractor and Flat Duo Jets. ....

Since I have now completed my two countdown radio shows for the Top 50 albums of 2020 see the big takeover “radio” button above to hear one song from each! here is my complete list of the 180 best albums, 100 best archive/retrospective/reissue releases, and 100 best stand-alone singles and EPs of this previous year my best bets on another great year for music, old and new.
And in one of the worst years of our lifetimes, here’s a small tip of my well-worn ballcap in profound gratitude to the artists below, for giving us this music to listen to while stuck at home. Perhaps half the below had already been recorded and was in process before COVID-19 shut us all down, which also curtailed many a scheduled recording session to go with all the cancelled tours. ....
