As you probably are aware, I am running for a second term on the Cape Henlopen school board. Back in 2016, I remember thinking that five years seemed like a long time to have ahead of me, but I am here to tell you the years have flown by. I now have two grandchildren in Cape schools and a third who is about 4 1/2 years away from kindergarten. As a board member, I have been fortunate to have been a part of some really great things happening in Cape. Strategic planning is now ongoing, our Spanish immersion program continues to grow, test scores have improved, and the opportunity gap is narrowing. We have hired many great teachers, administrators, and support staff reflective of the children we serve, supported professional development in trauma-informed care, restorative practices, and cultural responsiveness, aligned the curriculum across five elementary schools and updated our grading system, provided more opportunities for recognition of staff
Welcome to the height of migratory bird season, a fleeting time when, if youâre observant, you may spy a bright golden warbler in a tree or bush.
Mid-May is the heavy traveling season for such songbirds. Several species wear an array of yellow, brown, gray and black feathers â among other palettes â with equally colorful names, including Cape May warbler, Nashville warbler, chestnut-sided warbler and magnolia warbler. Not to forget songs and calls as varied as an orchestraâs instruments.
We enjoy this often-hidden spectacle for just a few weeks until theyâve all rushed northward to their summer breeding grounds.

When the people of Earth were told to stay away from one another in 2020, outdoor activities like boating and fishing became much more appealing. As it turns out, they liked it . a lot.
“You have a bunch of people who were never out on the water before and they’re loving it,” said Bev Rosella, co-owner of the local Freedom Boat Club franchise. “Now, they’re telling their friends how great it is.”
Over 300 new homes are coming to the southern side of Mulberry Knoll Road in Lewes.
It s a bucolic stretch of road off Route 24 that typically sees just 280 vehicles daily, according to a 2019 traffic study. But Scenic Manor, which plans to develop about 167 acres on either side of the road, will bump traffic numbers up over 3,000, according to the same study.
The Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission approved Land Investment, LLC s plan for the 319-home Scenic Manor development on April 22.
But their approval came following an April 8 meeting in which they received a petition with over 500 signatures and heard from about a half-dozen people who oppose the planned development.
