On Friday, the Lephalale area where Medupi and Matimba Power Stations are located, received 65mm of rain, said Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha. Despite still having some “water issues” at these stations, the rains have now “significantly reduced” allowing the plants to sufficiently operate, Mantshantsha told Daily Maverick. “The wet coal means [we] are not able to run the station at totally full capacity but we are able to continue burning the coal right now with this amount of rain,” said Mantshantsha. Eskom currently has 4,664 MW out on planned maintenance, while another 13,539 MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns, Eskom said in the statement. ....
Communities are fearing the worst for the people who are missing. In Kanyamazane, a man was swept away by floods, along with his house. Three days later, his family was desperate. Their call was heeded and a prayer service was held before the search. A tractor was used to search the muddy area where he was last seen but these efforts were in vain. While his family was left inconsolable, another mission began for an unidentified man who tried to cross a river during a storm. Captain Karel Pottie Potgieter from SAPS Inland Water-Policing & Diving Services said, when they got to the river the person behind him told him not to cross and to find another path. The man insisted he would make it but when he tried to cross, the current washed him away. ....

Roads, bridges and houses have been damaged in KaNyamazane, Mbombela. South Africa is experiencing torrential rains in parts of the country, with more expected over the coming few days. Eight people have died and five others are missing after torrential rains continue to wreak havoc in parts of Mpumalanga. Kanyamazane in Mbombela was the worst affected by flooding, with roads and bridges collapsing and houses washed away. Motorists were redirected to use other routes in the area. Other affected areas include areas in Thaba Chweu, Bushbuckridge and Mkhondo municipalities. Two house have collapsed this morning, near Sipho Maculuve s house.
