IDA'S LAW: Bill on missing, murdered Indigenous people passes


A bill headed to the governor’s desk focuses on solving cases involving missing and murdered Indigenous persons.The legislation is known as Ida’s Law. Author Rep. Collin Walke, D-Oklahoma City, spoke about the changes he hopes the bill will bring. Senate Bill 172 is a bipartisan piece of legislation. Joining Walke in drafting the bill was Sen. Paul Rosino, R-Oklahoma City. According to the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women, four out of five native women are affected by violence, and they face murder rates higher than the national level. It’s a problem in Oklahoma as well. “There are about 220 cases that need to be resolved that, again, because of lack of data, because of a lack of clear communication between these various agencies, they just simply haven’t been able to get addressed,” Walke said. PABLO — Legislators in Helena are discussing three bills that spotlight Missing Murdered Indigenous People.
The measures have been drafted to allow the Montana Missing Indigenous Persons (MMIP) Task Force to continue educating tribal communities have made their way to respective Senate committees for consideration.
