ERIC AYRES Staff Writer WHEELING The city of Wheeling is eyeing more improvements to its water system, as more than a half-million dollars worth of contracts are up for final consideration next week. Wheeling City Council members will hear final readings on ordinances introduced last week for two different major purchases to be charged to the city’s water distribution fund. They’re expected to vote to approve both ordinances during the next regular meeting of Wheeling City Council on Tuesday evening. One piece of legislation continues the city water department’s ongoing effort to install modern water meters with remote reading capabilities. Thousands of municipal water customers have already had new smart water meters installed, and there are a few thousand more to go to upgrade the entire system. ....

WHEELING – From a distance, motorists traveling up Market Street in downtown Wheeling Tuesday initially may have wondered why large plumes of steam were rising from the street. Upon closer inspection, crews were working on a utility project, one a bit different than the typical utility line installation. This week, crews with regional contractor Granite Inliner began using a high-temperature steam-sealing process to install new sanitary sewer line “sleeves” inside the old sanitary sewer lines beneath Market Street. The project is part of overall utility upgrades ahead of the city’s streetscape project, according to City of Wheeling Public Works Director Russell Jebbia. ....

WHEELING While many in the Ohio Valley were either wrapping up their New Year’s Eve reverie or still in bed sleeping through the first few hours of 2021, three families at Wheeling Hospital grew a little bigger. Three babies were born before 9 a.m. Friday at Wheeling Hospital, giving those families the chance to start the new year with new life and have New Year’s Day they’ll never forget. ....

A small section of 18th Street between Chapline and Market streets was closed off and enclosed permanently as part of the project. WHEELING – A large lot operated by West Virginia Northern Community College getting upgraded into an open greenspace and parking area behind the school’s B&O Building in downtown Wheeling is beginning to take shape. Crews with Savage Construction of Wheeling have been working at the site, located between Chapline and Market streets near a closed-off section of 18th Street, since early December. The project was approved during a recent Wheeling Planning Commission meeting, according to Wheeling Economic and Community Development Department Assistant Director Tom Connelly.
