Local Casinos Open Again, But Tribal Economies Took Pandemic 'Nosedive'

But in March 2020, they were forced to close as COVID-19 swept the state.
That meant hundreds of millions of dollars for tribal health care, education, and social services evaporated as casino revenues slowed or stopped.
Casinos in our area are mostly open again, but things aren’t like they were before. And it could be years before revenues recover.

Many casinos were at least partially open again by June 2020, but Mole Lake Casino, run by the Sokaogon Chippewa tribe, held out.
“We could have opened back in June, too, if we had wanted to,” Godin said. “But the tribe decided it was in their best interests to keep their small community safe by keeping their casino closed, and we actually had the financial means to do so.” ....

To provide a little context….It is probably somewhat important to point out that during this same 3 year period, for instance, the top name on the donor list (Molson / Miller) contributed almost $9 million to the bank accounts of a very large # of the elected representatives in Congress.
These astronomically higher dollar amounts are unmentioned in this article, yet they the essentially direct bribes paid to elected officials (aka: 100% legal campaign contributions). They represent a much larger problem in our government. ....

Opioid deaths up through first half of the year

RHINELANDER, WI (WSAU-WXPR) –Opioid hospitalizations and deaths are up in Wisconsin compared to last year.
The Department of Health Services has data compiled through May. Between January and May 487 people in the state have died because of opioids as opposed to the same time last year, only 361 people had died.
Forest County Potawatomi Health & Wellness Administrator Thomas Boelter says he’s seen an increase in drug use during the COVID-19 pandemic. He says part of the rise could be because of the anxiety created by the pandemic. “COVID brings a lot of fear to people and sometimes people if they don’t deal with their fear, if they don’t talk about their fear, it can be enough to set them off.” ....
