Hattiesburg detective appeals decision that allows lawsuit to continue

A Hattiesburg police officer who is being sued for allegedly violating the civil rights of a man falsely accused of murder has filed notice of appeal, seeking full dismissal of the claims against him. Arthur Jones of Gulfport said in court documents he told police he was at a nightclub in Gulfport at the time of the shooting. Video footage at the club later showed Jones was in Gulfport as he claimed. In addition, Jones cellphone records show he was in Gulfport, not Hattiesburg, on the morning of the murder. On July 5, 2015, 17-year-old Jabarri Goudy, a star football player at Collins High School, was shot multiple times outside a Hattiesburg nightclub around 2 a.m. Goudy died later the same day at Forrest General Hospital.

Case against Hattiesburg police detective will go to trial

View Comments A case against a Hattiesburg police detective and the city of Hattiesburg is scheduled for trial now that efforts to have the lawsuit dismissed have been denied. The city, which was dismissed from the suit, was named in the case because it oversees operations of the police department. Arthur Jones of Gulfport filed the lawsuit in federal court in 2018, claiming he was falsely accused of murder in the shooting death of 17-year-old Jabarri Goudy, a star football player at Collins High School, who was shot multiple times outside a Hattiesburg nightclub around 2 a.m. July 5, 2015. Goudy died later that day at Forrest General Hospital.
