More COVID-19 cases in Unalaska; Trident reopens Akutan plant

Share
Trident Seafoods has reopened its Akutan, Alaska, processing plant after more than 40 percent of its workforce there contracted COVID-19.
According to a company press release, the plant resumed some processing on Friday, 19 February, almost a month after the plant ceased operations due to the COVID-19 outbreak, which began with four positive cases but ballooned into a major outbreak. More than 115 workers who had been quarantined in Sand Point and Anchorage have returned to Akutan and resumed work on crab, cod, and pollock processing, the company said. Just two workers at the plant remain positive for COVID-19, and both are being isolated, according to the Anchorage Daily News. ....

Alaska to allow some out-of-state seafood workers to receive vaccines after rash of COVID outbreaks

In January, around 40 percent of employees at Trident Seafoods Akutan facility tested positive for COVID-19, followed by cases on its catcher-processor vessel
Kodiak Enterprise, at the company s Tacoma port.
Some 7,300 Alaska residents account for the 26,000 seafood processing workforce in the state, according to data from the McDowell Group (now McKinley).
Chris Barrows, president of Pacific Seafood Processors Association (PSPA), noted while the industry is thankful for the new inclusionary measure, the biggest constraint still is the lack of federal vaccine supply.
Dunleavy s office noted in the letter that industries with high numbers of seasonal, out-of-state workers place an additional burden on the Alaska healthcare industry, but said the state did not have enough vaccine doses at this point to allocate a specific portion to seafood and other industries. ....

Alaska now to offer vaccines to non-resident seafood industry workers buffeted by COVID-19 outbreaks

This story was jointly reported by the Seattle Times and the Anchorage Daily News.
Alaska officials will allow seafood industry workers from other states equal access to COVID-19 vaccines, a policy shift made Wednesday in the aftermath of outbreaks that flared in plants and offshore processing ships.
“While working in our state or fishing in our waters, we intend to protect your workers with the same standard of care we are extending to all Alaskans,” said a letter emailed Wednesday from the office of Gov. Mike Dunleavy to seafood and other industry officials.
Alaska seafood workers are vital to producing the fish burgers and other staples of the nation’s seafood supply. They often are at risk for serious outbreaks of the novel coronavirus that in recent weeks has infected hundreds and stalled production at some major plants. ....
