City OKs fire station kitchen renovation funds


The Kodiak City Council has authorized $42,817 for the renovation of the fire station’s kitchen, which is needed for “efficiency and safety reasons,” according to City Manager Mike Tvenge.  
The council voted at a regular meeting on Jan. 28 to pass an ordinance approving the renovation. Funds will come out of the city budget’s Building Improvement Fund. 
“After review of the kitchen appliances, cabinet and counter space, it is evident an upgrade is needed,” Tvenge wrote in a memo to the council. “This improvement will allow for multiple shifts to better utilize this space.” 
Tvenge noted that with increased personnel on each work shift, the current space needs a more efficient design and a working dishwasher.  ....

City fire chief not keen on Von Scheele site for new station


The city’s fire chief has implored the Kodiak City Council to avoid selecting Von Scheele Way as the location of the new fire station. 
Among the seven sites under consideration, the one at 170 Von Scheele Way adjacent to Safeway scored highest on a list of needs for the new station, but still presents obstacles.  
“Do not stick us out on Von Scheele,” City Fire Chief Jim Mullican said at a meeting last week.
“Putting the station out there will dramatically increase my response time to my primary hazards, which is also the economic base for this community.”
Mullican was referring to downtown Kodiak and the area by Saint Paul Harbor where the city’s seafood processing plants are located.  ....

Study to explore economic benefits of expanding city limits


The Kodiak City Council has authorized a $35,000 economic analysis for expanding the city limits through annexation.
Research for the study will be led by Katie Cueva, an assistant professor of health policy with the Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of Alaska Anchorage. 
The study was authorized at a city council meeting on Thursday. Recent discussions about annexation have focused on extending the city’s limits northward to include Kodiak Island Borough Service District Number 1, undeveloped city property and the city wastewater treatment plant. 
The city is also talking about annexing areas southward, stretching from the city’s southern border to Boy Scout Lake and the U.S. Coast Guard Lake Louise housing development.  ....
