We moved beyond the political tensions to building a state historic park in its many dimensions in the heart of downtown.
Plus, we expanded our commitments to a full restoration of Casa de la Guerra and to creating a new park at Santa Inés Mission Mills.
The 1990s were for me the halcyon years. Adobe reconstruction and restorations were central to the work of SBTHP, but key presidio area properties were also acquired during this time; many publications in the form of books, historical pamphlets and brochures were published; our Soldados del Presidio de Santa Bárbara, officially the city’s colonial militia, were formed; and with them and other volunteer programs our living history activities thrived. ....

Jarrell Jackman: El Paseo's Donation to Santa Barbara Trust Sparked Key Era of Preservation | Homes & Lifestyle


Santa Barbara underwent an architectural rebirth after the destructive 1925 earthquake. The town was rebuilt in the Spanish colonial Mediterranean architecture that distinguishes its downtown landscape to this day.
One of the models for its rebirth was El Paseo, a complex of shops, restaurants, offices and apartments built in the early 1920s, prior to the quake.
Occupying most of the first block on the north side of East De la Guerra Street between State and Anacapa streets, it was constructed around the historic Casa de la Guerra, at 15 E. De la Guerra St., and incorporated the adobe into the complex.
El Paseo had come through the earthquake with only minor damage but, from the 1920s to 1970, it had had a series of owners, none of whom had done any major renovation since its opening. ....

She served on the city Planning Commission from 1973 to 1975, the City Council from 1975 to 1981 and as mayor from 1981 to 1993. She returned to public life in 2009, serving again on the Planning Commission.
Lodge was married to former Santa Barbara County Superior Court Judge Joseph Lodge, and they raised four daughters. Lodge s husband s died 12 years ago.
She said she has spent a lot of time tending her garden and growing fragrant roses at her home on Santa Barbara s Riviera. Over the years, she also as volunteered at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse and the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. ....
