In visit to Ramallah, US secretary of state pledges massive development and economic aid for Palestinians and to rebuild Gaza, reopening of Jerusalem consulate, upgrading of US-Palestinian ties
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken vowed Tuesday to restore ties with the Palestinian Authority and pledged financial aid to help rebuild the war-battered Gaza Strip and bolster the Egyptian brokered cease-fire between Hamas and Israel. He also insisted that Hamas, the Islamist group that rules the impoverished coastal strip, would not benefit from any aid.
Blinken’s meeting with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah, the seat of the PA government in the West Bank, comes after 11 days of heavy fighting in and around the Gaza Strip and southern Israel, and as unrest continues to grip east Jerusalem and the West Bank. ....

Here is one thing that Secretary of State Antony Blinken is definitely not doing in a visit to Jerusalem. It s hard to see a way that Antony Blinken or any diplomat could significantly change the broad situation in the Middle East. Israelis and Palestinians have fought several wars, and a two-state solution is nowhere near. What Blinken is doing is addressing more immediate problems. NPR s Jackie Northam is in Jerusalem. Israeli cabinet approves cease-fire with Hamas amid 2nd week of violence

(JERUSALEM) Israel’s security cabinet has approved a cease-fire with Hamas, the prime minister’s office announced Thursday.
The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a statement Thursday evening stating that the Political Security Cabinet accepted a recommendation for a “bilateral cease-fire without any conditions.” It said the cease-fire would take effect “later,” but did not make clear when.
“The chief of staff, the military echelon and the head of the Shin Bet reviewed with the ministers Israel’s great achievements in the campaign, some of which were unprecedented,” the statement read. “The political echelon emphasizes that the reality on the ground will determine the continuation of the campaign.” ....
