With the backing of the White House, U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez on Thursday introduced legislation that would provide a path to citizenship for an estimated 11 million unauthorized immigrants, offering expedited status for those brought to the U.S. as children, for farmworkers, and those with temporary protected status because of upheaval in their homelands.
The U.S. Citizenship Act also would use technology to tighten surveillance at border crossings, and send billions of dollars to improve conditions in Central American countries so that residents living there won’t feel they need to leave home. ....
