China has announced the “indefinite suspension” of all activities under its Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED) with Australia – but what could this action mean for the energy industry?
The announcement comes as no surprise to many, as relations have been strained between the nations after Canberra last year called for an inquiry into the origin of the coronavirus pandemic, which first broke out in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019. ....

But while China may be happy to deal with whoever wields power in Naypyidaw, it is increasingly clear the chain of events the coup unleashed could threaten its interests, Gareth Price, senior research fellow at the Asia-Pacific program of British think tank Chatham House, said in a March note.
Naypyidaw is the capital city of Myanmar and one of the hotspots for anti-coup protests. Security forces have used increasingly violent tactics to suppress the demonstrations, killing more than 550 civilians, reported Reuters.
Demonstrators, outraged over Beijing s apparent lack of concern for those killed in protests, attacked Chinese-run factories in Myanmar last month, the Associated Press reported. In response, Beijing urged Myanmar to ensure the safety of life and property of Chinese businesses and personnel there. ....

Hong Kong limits public information as China exerts control

Hong Kong institutions are further restricting public access to information, raising concerns over transparency as China increases its grip over the Asian financial hub.
The most significant change is a government proposal to restrict public access to the Companies Registry, limiting the information to correspondence addresses as opposed to personal residences and only partial ID numbers.
On Wednesday, the Foreign Correspondents’ Club, Hong Kong, called on the government to halt the move, arguing “such changes will be harmful to press freedom and transparency in the city” and will remove a tool also regularly used by financial, legal and compliance professionals. ....
