CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Charlottesville is facing an $8.3 million shortfall in tax revenue due to the pandemic, but City Council members say they’ve planned to make up for it.
The loss in tax revenue comes as a result of less money generated from tourism, hotels, and restaurants.
Last year, council saved roughly $8 million that would’ve gone toward capital projects, like sidewalk updates, to prepare for pandemic-induced losses.
Council recently passed a $192.2 million budget for next fiscal year, starting in July, but Councilor Lloyd Snook said that budget could see a shortfall, too. ....

Mayor Walker blasts Council colleagues about discretionary spending limit

Photo: WINA
CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – Mayor Nikuyah Walker digs at her City Council colleagues in a Facebook post for calling the $1000 councilor allowance in the 2022 city budget a lack of “meaningful discretionary spending”. The mayor Walker posted a photo of $12,000 she spent for 7th District activities for this fiscal year… with fairly nebulous line items of $3000 for youth programs and activities… $3000 for publications/post cards/media mailings… and $1200 meetings and refreshments every other month. She says under the new ordinance, such spending without approval of the entire council could hold her “civilly” or “criminally” liable.
She labels her colleagues as people “who haven’t created anything during their tenure” and said the staff recommendation was $2200, but was busted down to 1000 because Councilor Lloyd Snook believes they should not have such discretionary spending. ....

Right now, Charlottesville is in limbo on its monument situation. City Councilor Lloyd Snook says that’s because the city has only received an opinion from the Supreme Court so far. They are still waiting on an official mandate to move forward. ....

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Charlottesville’s new city manager, Chip Boyles, officially takes the reins in less than two weeks, but now a community activist is raising concerns about his hiring process and contract.
Tanesha Hudson says Chip Boyles’ new contract outwardly violates a state code. This statute requires anyone appointed to the city manager position to be under an indefinite term unless it is a temporary position for no more than a year. ....
