Six councillors who blocked more wheelchair accessible homes slammed by disabled rights campaigner

A DISABLED rights campaigner has rounded on six councillors who blocked a bid to increase the number of wheelchair accessible homes within the area s new planning blueprint.
Councillor Jim MacLeod had called for a 10 per cent benchmark for developments of more than 20 new build homes.
This motion regarding the Local Development Plan was put forward by his SNP colleague councillor Chris Curley at a special meeting of the environment and regeneration committee, only to be rejected by a 6-5 vote.
Councillor Curley s amendment for ten per cent was supported by committee members John Crowther, Stephen McCabe, Jim McEleny and Innes Nelson. ....

Inverclyde Council leader's 'serious concerns' over theupcoming Scottish Parliament election

Labour s Stephen McCabe feels the poll will be difficult to run it in the current climate.
He pressed senior officials on the issue at a full council meeting as he asked whether the local authority would be able to sufficiently protect voters and staff going to the polls during the pandemic.
He also highlighted his worries around parties not being able to campaign in the usual manner and what effect that could have on the result.
While insisting all necessary preparations were being made, chief executive Aubrey Fawcett - returning officer for the area - admitted he shared Councillor McCabe s concerns. ....

Warning over future council tax rise following freeze

COUNCIL tax rates will be frozen in Inverclyde for the next year after elected members voted unanimously to access extra funding offered up by the Scottish Government.
Leader Stephen McCabe said he reluctantly tabled a motion to keep bills static, as he slammed ministers for undermining the role of local authorities to set their own tax levels.
It means the annual Band D bill - used as the general measure of council tax - will remain at £1,331.
Finance secretary Kate Forbes offered to hand councils an extra £90m in funding in her draft budget last month, providing they froze council tax for 2021/22. ....

Plans to replace century-old Greenock Prison shelved for years

PLANS to replace Greenock s 110-year-old prison have been shelved yet again until at least 2026 five years after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon urged clarity on the matter.
The decision by the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) comes after Ms Sturgeon s government spent nearly £8m of public money on buying and clearing a proposed site in the wouth west of the town for a new jail in 2011.
News of the delay has sparked deep disappointment within Inverclyde Council.
Local authority leader Stephen McCabe yesterday issued a direct challenge to SNP MSP Stuart McMillan over the future suitability of the existing Gateside jail, which was built in 1910. ....
