CORNWALL, Ontario – The Coalition for Unity, Respect & Equity/Equality for All (CUREA) has offered their views on one possible candidate to fill the vacant office of Mayor of the City of Cornwall.
On Tuesday, Cornwall Mayor Bernadette Clement resigned after being named to the Senate of Canada. Under the Municipal Act, Council has 60 days to fill the vacancy either through appointment, or through a by-election.
If Council decides to appoint someone to fill the vacancy from within their own ranks one possible candidate would be Councillor Glen Grant, a long time City Councillor and current Chair of the Police Services Board. ....

Calvin councillor resigns over 'toxic' environment

A Calvin councillor has resigned over what he calls a “toxic work environment” following the release of an integrity commissioner report that found him in violation of the municipality’s code of conduct.
Coun. Dean Grant announced his resignation during a council meeting Tuesday, prior to members voting on whether to sanction him as recommended by the municipality’s integrity commissioner, E4M or Expertise for Municipalities.

'Time is running out to stop plans for 1,000 homes', says Malmesbury councillor


RESIDENTS are being urged to help stop plans for 1,000 new homes in the Malmesbury area.
Wiltshire councillor for the town, Gavin Grant, has written to residents in 11 areas cited for new housing developments urging them to speak out.
Wiltshire Council is currently consulting on 11 potential sites in and around Malmesbury that could take new houses. If all were developed another 1,000 houses would be built.
In his letter Councillor Grant says residents must speak out to oppose these plans before the end of the Wiltshire Council consultation on Tuesday, March 9.
Explaining why he had written his letter, Cllr Grant said: “Malmesbury is a special and beautiful place. There are only a few days left to speak up to tell Wiltshire Council that we want to keep it that way.” ....

South Lanarkshire Council meeting suspended after sign language interpreters have to leave

Two BSL interpreters had been arranged for just two hours by South Lanarkshire Council to allow Councillor Grant Ferguson to participate in two council meetings which were “always going to be long”.
Provost Ian McAllan apologised to members and said: “We need to learn from this experience and certainly on my watch, it will not happen again.”
Executive director Paul Manning “profusely apologised” to members after the meeting for the error and inconvenience as a result.
Councillors had been debating a motion from Liberal Democrat group leader Councillor Robert Brown which would have committed the council to becoming pesticide-free. ....
