May Hawthorne with the Mayor, Councillor Peter Johnston and Mrs Jacqueline Stewart MBE DL. Mary (May) Hawthorne celebrated the remarkable milestone on May 14 with a visit from Mrs Jacqueline Stewart MBE DL and the Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Peter Johnston. Mrs Stewart presented Mrs Hawthorne with cards from Her Majesty The Queen and the Lord Lieutenant of County Antrim, Mr David McCorkell KStJ. Mrs Stewart also surprised Mrs Hawthorne with a personal card and a spring planter and the first citizen presented her with a card, flowers and a special Northern Ireland centenary medal. Mrs Hawthorne’s daughter Marie, son Billy and daughter-in-law Muriel were also in attendance. ....
Celebrating the NI Centenary in the borough A tree has been planted in the People’s Park as part of the Council’s Northern Ireland Centenary Programme. Monday, 10th May 2021, 7:00 am Planting ceremonies also took place in the borough’s other two main town’s of Larne and Carrick. Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Peter Johnston said: “A century ago, the people of Mid and East Antrim witnessed the establishment of Northern Ireland as a result of the Government of Ireland Act 1920. To contribute to that history, we have planted a tree in each of our three main towns to mark this momentous occasion. This will be a living and lasting legacy of this centenary year here in Mid and East Antrim. ....
Dr Jonathan Rea bursary is now open for applications World Superbike racing champion Dr Jonathan Rea MBE has been conferred with the Freedom of the Borough at a special ceremony held by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council. Wednesday, 5th May 2021, 9:00 am To mark the special occasion a ‘perpetual’ bursary has been launched by Council in Dr Jonathan Rea’s name. The purpose of this is to provide additional support to sporting individuals within the Borough who will act as effective ambassadors for Mid and East Antrim in their chosen sporting activity, with funding up to £2,000 per individual. Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough, Councillor Peter Johnston said: “The Freedom of the Borough is the highest accolade that Council can award and I am delighted to have presented it to World Superbike Champion Dr Jonathan Rea MBE. ....
