Concern at Cumbria County Council meeting over Department of Health language


Offence was taken to “unforgivable” wording in a report on coronavirus outbreak funding by a county councillor who felt it laid blame on the doorstep of communities who are “under-served”.
A meeting of Cumbria County Council’s cabinet yesterday saw councillor Deborah Earl and Public Health Director Colin Cox present a report that detailed the plans for the Contain Outbreak Management Fund.
Wording from the UK Government’s Department for Health and Social Care in the report referred to “hard to reach groups”.
Councillor Patricia Bell said: “I’m really glad Colin’s on the call because I’d like to thank him and his team for their continuing hard work, I know they are absolutely focussed on managing the pandemic and now more towards recovery but I am disappointed on page 42, paragraph 10 to see the term ‘hard to reach groups’. ....

A Cumbrian man who has gone that extra mile to campaign for meaningful care home visits to be restored has been shortlisted for a prestigious award.
Graeme McGrory, 66, from Dearham, was nominated for an Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Hero Award for Campaigning.
The virtual awards ceremony, which will be presented by Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan, will take place on May 20 during Dementia Action Week (May 17-23).
Sponsored by Tunstall Healthcare, the awards will showcase the stories of people doing outstanding things during the pandemic – Alzheimer’s Society’s dementia heroes. ....
