The province says it has reached a milestone for immunizing northern first nations against COVID-19.
It says everyone living in the 31 remote communities has received the first dose of the vaccine, who wants one.
Overall, over 15 thousand doses of the COVID-19 vaccine has been delivered in communities in the far north.
That includes over 12 thousand first doses and 2,664 second doses.
Ornge Air helped deliver the vaccines and health professionals to the remote communities. ....

Summit County weighs what to do about trail overcrowding

Summit County on Wednesday heard short- and long-term plans from the group working to alleviate trail overcrowding. The Snyderville Basin Recreation District has taken steps to address the issue, including ticketing vehicles that are parked illegally and installing trail counters to help officials plan how best to disperse traffic. Other short-term plans include installing bike racks at trailheads, and changing the direction of trails and the uses allowed on them during peak times.

The official who manages trails for the Snyderville Basin Recreation District recently described a vision for the future, a shuttle system that could pick people up from Main Street or transit centers and bring them deep into the Basin’s trail network. That would ease congestion issues and enable users to get lost in nature more easily than if they’d driven themselves and parked at trailheads. ....

Caribou considers a new look, but it may not come cheap

Caribou is looking for a new look, but some officials there are sticker-shocked by the potential cost of rebranding the city.
For at least a decade, Caribou signs, police cars, promotional materials, city documents and other things have displayed a familiar logo: a silhouette of the namesake deer species, surrounded by the slogan “the most northeastern city in the United States.”
Problem is, it’s not clear what community holds that distinction. Caribou’s name appears nowhere in the logo.
In a meeting of the Caribou City Council last week, Councilor Mark Goughan voiced frustration with the graphic image.
“I’ve attended two previous logo committee meetings over the last 25 to 30 years and there’s been two attempts to do this,” he said. “And then it came up with this logo and we never put ‘Caribou’ on it.” ....
