New chairman is elected to Craven District Council

Cllr Alan Sutcliffe, chairman of Craven District Council
COUNCILLOR Alan Sutcliffe has been elected as the new chairman of Craven District Council.
The new first citizen of Craven, Cllr Sutcliffe, ward member for Gargrave and Malhamdale, was unanimously voted in as chairman at the Annual Council Meeting, held at Gargrave Village Hall on Tuesday.
Councillor Simon Myers, also a ward member for Gargrave and Malhamdale, and deputy leader of the council, was unanimously elected as vice-chairman.
Accepting the office, Cllr Sutcliffe said: “Thank you for electing me chairman of council and for the honour that goes with that role.
“I look forward to an interesting year, initially with Covid-19 restrictions but hopefully we will be returning to the normal meetings and activities later in the civic year.” ....

LETTER: Urgent need for a proper functioning planning department

RESPONDING to the articles in the Craven Herald about the urgent need for Craven to have a properly functioning planning department – I couldn’t agree more.
I do not wish anybody else in the district to experience what I have over a period of ten years, as I have sought to engage constructively with the planning department regarding local development on, or affecting, my farm.
I directly fed my concerns in to the planning peer review conducted by the Local Government Association last September to express my dissatisfaction and concerns, which go to the deepest level. ....

Work to reduce risk of flooding in Skipton gets underway

A PROJECT aimed at reducing the risk of flooding in West Skipton has got underway.
The Craven District Council led scheme will see the repair of the culverts - or channels - in Aireville Park, which allow Gallow Syke, a tributary of Ings Beck, to flow through the park. It is part of the wider, £5 million redevelopment of the area around Engine Shed Lane and Ings Lane and the new Wyvern Park development.
Councillor Simon Myers, the council’s lead member for Enterprising Craven, said: “This work will not cause any major disruption for users of Aireville Park, but they may be curious about why it is taking place. The project is an important part of the delivery of the £5 million Skipton Employment and Housing Growth scheme, funded by the Government’s Local Growth Fund, awarded by the York and North Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership. ....
