One of the main reasons academics explain our previous inability to act on climate change is the separation in time between our actions and their consequences, and I agree that this has made taking action difficult in the past. But this is no longer a valid excuse. Climate change is here and now, and continuing to talk about climate change as a future problem is climate denial.

Eugene City Council Discusses Community Safety Initiative Survey Results

A recent survey about Eugene’s Community Safety Initiative (CSI) found that community members want the payroll tax funds to go towards less policing and more resources for mental health and other social services. Eugene City Councilors discussed the survey during a work session on May 10.
The survey also found that roughly one-third of responders didn’t know anything about the payroll tax.
“I wasn’t surprised by the results,” City Councilor Emily Semple said. “It’s daunting but at least we can see the ways people think we should make it better, and that’s important.”
When the CSI was first adopted in June 2019, it was unpopular throughout the community. The tax is designed to raise additional money to pay for police and other safety initiatives. The council was criticized for passing the ordinance without putting it on the ballot, allowing voters to have a say. Eugene, NW Natural disagree on linking right of way use to carbon goals

Eugene officials and a local natural gas provider disagree on whether the city can link ability to use public rights of way to carbon reduction goals.
It s been the biggest stumbling block as the city has attempted to negotiate a new franchise agreement with NW Natural before a quickly approaching deadline, City Manager Sarah Medary said.
We feel we have authority to include carbon reduction as a condition of using right of way, Medary said during a Monday City Council work session.
The franchise agreement gives NW Natural the legal authority to lay, maintain and operate pipes and other facilities in and under streets, sidewalks and other public rights of way when it goes out to work on a line, install a new line or take other similar actions that aren t related to emergency repairs. ....
