It s something two Medford officials are proposing. City Council President Richard Caraviello and Vice President Adam Knight on April 13 introduced a proposal for the Historic District Commission to study the idea. “South Medford was a very vibrant Italian-American neighborhood,” Knight said. “It’s important we remember the roots of that neighborhood. This is a chance to capitalize on great history in Medford,” that might be documented through educational plaques and storyboards. He noted many Italian-American families moved to the neighborhood from Boston’s North End and “you couldn’t walk through without hearing someone speak fluent Italian.” ....

Planning consultant Jennifer Goldson said an HPP “gives the Zoning Board of Appeals greater ability to deny (projects permitted through Massachusetts General Law) 40B proposals,” a reference to the so-called the so-called “Comprehensive Permit Act” or anti-snob zoning, which eliminates separate permits for developers from various boards in favor of one permit from Zoning Boards of Appeal in order to promote affordable housing. Communities that reach 10% of its stock as affordable are exempt from 40B. Medford is at approximately 7.1% and needs 671 units to reach the 10% goal. ....
