North Yorkshire's two-tier councils replaced with single unitary authority in biggest local government shake-up in almost 50 years

Mr Jenrick said the decision was a “significant step” towards ensuring the people and businesses across North Yorkshire can in future have “sustainable high-quality local services they deserve”.
He added that the decision showed the Government remains “committed to devolving power to people and places across the UK”.
“We are open to devolution where there is strong local leadership, whether supported by two tier local government, unitary structures or various joint arrangements,” he said.
The decision has divided political figures across the county.
Leader of North Yorkshire County Council, Councillor Carl Les said: “We are pleased that this has been recognised by the Government as the right thing for the future, but now we have to work together between the two tiers to make the transition as good as possible for the benefit of our residents, our businesses and the many staff that we employ as well. ....

"Lib Dem and Green inaction over Aspden vote is a disgrace"

AS a member of the public who spoke at the City of York Council meeting calling for the resignation of the council leader, I am shocked and dismayed to discover that not one single Green or Lib Dem councillor had the courage or honesty to support the vote of no confidence.
This whole sorry saga is not a party political issue. It is about whether our elected representatives conduct themselves in accordance with the Nolan Principles referring particularly to truth, openness and integrity.
I don’t know Councillor Aspden and I don’t know whether he is a bully or not but the Public Interest Report is quite clear that the actions taken around the departure of Mary Weastell were inappropriate and potentially illegal. Councillor Aspden was central to this decision making and he failed to declare an interest and withdraw from the key meeting in February 2020. ....

Damning auditor report: Questions we asked council leader Keith Aspden

FOLLOWING the publication of a damning public interest report into the council s handling of a payout to the former chief executive, The Press asked council leader Keith Aspden a series of questions.
A spokesperson for the Liberal Democrat group said the answers were addressed in Cllr Aspden s initial statement about the report released on Monday.
The Press asked the following questions:
Labour and York Conservatives are calling for you to resign, will you? If not why not?
Cllr Aspden faces calls to resign from opposition councillors over the report. The report by auditors Mazars identifies a series of issues with the council s handling of the payout. ....
