Nomination Papers Available May 17, Major Changes to Voting This Fall – Everett Independent

Just as what is expected to be a wave of candidates taking out Nomination Papers for virtually every office this coming Monday, May 17, there will also be some new changes in the voting regimen as ward-only voting for Council and School Committee has been officially established in this year’s Election calendar.
City Clerk Sergio Cornelio said this week that he is preparing in his office to release Nomination Papers on May 17, and expects to have a lot of interest in every office this year.
Already, there are three announced mayoral candidates who will be taking out papers, including Mayor Carlo DeMaria, Councilor Gerly Adrien and Councilor Fred Capone. With those three candidates likely to make the ballot, and great interest in seats on the Council and School Committee, Cornelio said they do expect there to be a robust Preliminary Election on Sept. 21 to weed out candidates for the final Municipal Election on Nov. 2. ....

The Everett City Council met on Monday night and approved a plan to move their meetings to the Everett High School Library while their Chambers are being updated for better online capabilities, while at the same time approving a new Council rule that sets a code of decorum for remote online meetings.
The Council informally agreed to an offer from School Committee Chair Frank Parker and Supt. Priya Tahiliani to move in-person and remote meetings to the Everett High Library – where the School Committee holds their meetings currently. The move would take place soon while the Everett Council Chambers are being refurbished and updated for better online capabilities and more COVID-conducive seating arrangements. The massive overhaul is expected to take several months. ....

Administration, Union at odds on 21st Century Fire Department plan – Everett Independent

Mayor Carlo DeMaria announced this week he will hire 20 new members of the Everett Fire Department (EFD) to create a new Fire-based ambulance service, but members of the Fire Union say they have been completely left out of the plan for their Department.
In an op-ed posted on Social Media, Mayor DeMaria said after reading an article last week about low staffing levels in the EFD, he was compelled to release his plan for the City’s first-ever Emergency Medical Service (EMS) that would be based out of the Fire Department.
“While there will always be a need for fire suppression in the City, the Administration has thoroughly studied how to better serve our residents based on the type, frequency, and level of calls received by the Everett Fire Department over the past five years,” wrote the mayor. “The analysis of the data has resulted in a strategic plan that will fill the vacancies in the Everett Fire Department and establish Everett’s own fire-based EMS service for ....
