THE Conservatives strengthened their grip on power in Swindon as Labour’s red wall in the centre of town collapsed.
As votes were counted at Steam yesterday, the Tories always looked likely to hold on to their majority in Euclid Street.
But on a day to remember for the party up and down the country they sealed the deal with three stunning victories in Penhill & Upper Stratton, Rodbourne Cheney and Central. All three wards have been solid Labour seats until now – with even the loss of Penhill in 2019 attributable to a split Labour vote. ....

Haydon Wick – originally small village distinct from Swindon – was part of the rapid post-war expansion of the town in the latter half of the 20th century.
Now it is one of the town’s inner suburbs, with Priory Vale and Blunsdon St Andrew forming the outer boundary of the borough further north and west.
It’s an area of modern family homes designed in the fashion of the late 20th century with lots of cul-de-sacs coming off curving primary roads.
It has the highest density of any ward in North Swindon – more than even the older Victorian areas of ranks of terraced streets. ....

The Oasis needed significant investment 10 years ago. If you’d told me that we’d be here now and it would not have got better, that we’d have gone backwards because we don’t have it anymore, I’d have been shocked.

But Coun Renard says he doesn’t think a subsidy from the council is the answer.
He wrote: “Some commentators have called for the council to provide funding to enable the leisure centre to reopen when the current Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted, but this would not be a sensible use of taxpayers’ money.
“The Oasis is more than 40 years old and despite Seven Capital having spent millions of pounds over the last few years to keep it going, it still requires many more millions to bring it up to modern standards and provide a leisure offer that is sustainable in the long-term. ....
