(Google Maps) GREAT FALLS, VA In honor of Historic Preservation Month, the Fairfax County Park Authority is offering a peek at ongoing preservation work underway at one of its historic properties the Turner Farmhouse in Great Falls. People taking part in the Thursday virtual watch party will be able to view a video tour of the farmhouse, which is being renovated as part of the county s Resident Curator Program. The video will examine the history of the property and the repairs the curator has completed since moving in. ....

(Shutterstock) FAIRFAX CITY, VA Presidents Day, also known as the observed Washington s Birthday, will result in some service changes in City of Fairfax. The holiday was actually established in 1885 to honor President George Washington. Then, as part of a Uniform Monday Holiday Act that proposed the country celebrate holidays on Mondays rather than the day they fell on the calendar so that workers could have three-day weekends, it was proposed to be changed. That didn t go over so well at first. During debate on the bill, it was proposed that Washington s Birthday be renamed Presidents Day to celebrate the birthdays of both Washington on Feb. 22 and President Abe Lincoln s birthday on Feb. 12. Congress actually rejected the name change in 1968 version of the bill. But after the bill went into effect in 1971, Presidents Day became the commonly accepted name anyway. ....

The Virginia House of Delegates commended the Laurel Hill Park Volunteer Team (PVT) by Joint Resolution 257, delivered by Del. Kathy Tran (D-42), in a brief presentation ceremony on Dec. 12 in the Lorton Park. The Resolution recognized the Laurel Hill PVT for its “mission to make Laurel Hill Park as beautiful and inviting as possible and to protect the park’s pristine nature, wildlife, birds, and plants…” The group had been recognized by Fairfax County in 2019, with the Elly Doyle Special Recognition Award, as one of the first groups to collaborate with the County Park Authority through the newly established Park Volunteer Team Program. The group stepped forward early to help refine the program model for coordinating park maintenance efforts between county employees and volunteers. ....
