U.S. Import Boom Hits New Heights with Little Signs of Letting Up – gCaptain


Congestion levels at the major North America container gateways are now expected to persist until the summer, as the consumer-driven import boom continues.
April set new records, according to new data from PIERS, which recorded 31% year-on-year growth in containerised imports to the US from Asia.
It said 1.57m teu arrived from Asia last month, the most on record, and it was the tenth consecutive month for year-on-year growth.
“The container import boom shows no sign of slowing as lockdown eases. This high volume is set to stay with us for the months ahead as the economy recovers,” said Brendan Neary, associate director PIERS by IHS Markit. ....

Suez Canal Chairman Hits Back Over Ever Given Blame – gCaptain


Suez Canal Authority (SCA) chairman Osama Rabie has defended the handling of the 
Ever Given grounding and revealed there had been a death during the operation to free the ship.
During a visit by Panama’s ambassador to Egypt, along with the director general of the Panamanian Maritime Authority (under which the 
Ever Given is flagged), Admiral Rabie claimed vessel owner Shoei Kisen “did not show the due recognition deserved, which did not reflect an understanding of the huge losses incurred by the authority due to the incident, that can be seen in the damage to a number of participating marine units and the sinking of one of SCA marine units during the salvage operations, resulting in the death of one of the participants in the salvage operations, as well as the material and moral damages that the reputation of the Suez Canal has sustained by the suspension of navigation traffic”. ....

ZIM Rides Rising Tide to Record Quarterly Profit – gCaptain

Israeli container shipping carrier Zim, recently listed on the New York Stock Exchange, rewarded investors yesterday, reporting first-quarter results that were among some of the best in the sector.
The carrier saw Q1 revenue more than double year on year, to $1.744bn, on the back of soaring freight rates, and its revenue per teu rose from $1,091 in the Q1 20 to $1,925 this year.
And it saw 28% year-on-year growth in volumes – so far the highest recorded by any carrier that publishes its results.
Adjusted ebitda was $821m, compared with $97m the year before, with a 47% margin, and net profit was $590m, compared with a $12m loss in the first quarter last year. ....
