Jonathan Jennings was the first governor of Indiana and a nine-term congressman from Indiana. Born in Readington Township, he studied law before immigrating to the Indiana Territory in 1806. Jennings became involved in a dispute with the territorial governor, William Henry Harrison, that soon led him to enter politics and set the tone for his early political career.
He was elected as the Indiana Territory s delegate to the U.S. Congress by dividing the pro-Harrison supporters and running as an anti-Harrison candidate. By 1812 he was the leader of the anti-slavery and pro-statehood faction of the territorial government. Jennings and his political allies took control of the territorial assembly and dominated governmental affairs after the resignation of Governor Harrison in 1812. As the country s leaders are honored this President s Day weekend, consider a trip this year to the earliest days of our country by visiting Vincennes, the oldest city in our state, one of the oldest settlements west of the Appalachians and the former home of William Henry Harrison, our ninth president.
Harrison was only in his late 20s, but already the hero of several major victories, when in 1802 he was appointed governor of the newly created Indiana territory headquartered in Vincennes. The territory was a vast swath of land that included all of Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin, Minnesota east of the Mississippi River, a slice of present day Ohio and large sections of both the Upper Peninsula and the western half of the Lower Peninsula in what would become the state of Michigan.

World War 1 and Southeast Asia Van Ybiernas
FOR a slew of historians headed by Harry Benda, World War 2 is considered a watershed era in the history of Southeast Asia, shaping the region pretty much into what it is today. By comparison, very scant attention has been given to World War 1. Heather Streets-Salter has an explanation for this:
“Very little has been written about Southeast Asia and the Great War…. This is not difficult to understand: the region did not become a major theater of war, and of all the colonies in the area, only French Indochina sent soldiers and laborers to Europe. In fact, much of the region including the Dutch East Indies, Siam (until 1917), and the Philippines (until 1917) remained officially neutral for all or most of the war.”
