Community Voices: Tennessee's tax burden unfairly favors higher earners


Do the federal and state tax laws favor wealthy individuals and corporations? According to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy there were 55 Fortune 500 profitable corporations that paid zero federal income taxes in 2020. Their pretax revenue totaled $40.5 billion according to their required annual financial reports.

The Republican Tax Cut and Jobs Act of 2017 legislation lowered the corporation tax rate from 35% to 21%. Neither the Republican corporate tax cut nor the 2020 Cares Act closed the web of loopholes that give corporations the opportunity to dodge taxes during a profitable year. The legislation also failed to require a minimum tax to be paid by all profitable corporations. At the suggested minimum tax rate of 15% to be paid by all 55 profitable corporations, the tax revenue for the U.S. government would have been $6.07 billion. ....

Hazelwood Says Judge Collier Biased Against Him And Should Step Aside For 2nd Trial; 2nd Trial Said To Focus Much More On Haslam Family

Former Pilot Flying J president Mark Hazelwood said Chattanooga Federal Judge Curtis Collier is biased against him and should not preside over his retrial.
Convictions against Hazelwood were overturned by two members of a three judge panel of the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals based on Judge Collier allowing the jury to hear racist songs and banter during a Pilot sales party attended by Hazelwood. 
New attorneys for Hazelwood said the recordings were highly prejudicial to Hazelwood and tainted the jury against him.  ....

Sadruddins Point Blame Toward Cagle In Connection With Failed Pikeville Plant, TEMA Tarps Venture; Twin Brothers Ask Probation

Attorneys for two brothers who faced federal charges in connection with a Pikeville textile plant that never opened say they should receive probation or home confinement.
Karim and Rahim Sadruddin earlier pleaded guilty to wire fraud and money laundering. Their guideline sentencing range is 70-87 months.
Attorneys Lee Davis and Eugene Shiles said the twin brothers relied heavily on Chattanooga businessman Ed Cagle in connection with the textile plant and a plan to sell tarps to the federal government.
It was announced in 2017 at a press conference attended by Governor Bill Haslam that the plant would provide 1,000 jobs.  ....
