On June 29, 1921, the 104th Observation Squadron was federally recognized at the now-extinct Logan Field in the Baltimore suburb of Dundalk. This National Guard squadron was the first such post-World War I unit to be equipped with its own aircraft, which initially comprised thirteen Curtiss JN-4 Jennies. During World War II, the 104th flew anti-submarine patrols out of Atlantic City, New Jersey and later from Langley Field, Virginia.
After the war, the unit reactivated at Baltimore Municipal Airport (which closed in December 1960) as the 104th Fighter Squadron (FS), fielding P-47D Thunderbolts. In 1955, the 104th transitioned into a fighter-interceptor squadron (FIS) with F-86H Sabres. Two years later the 104th relocated to an airfield then-known as Glenn L. A black and grey, U.S. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft from the Indiana Air National Guard’s 122nd Fighter Wing was recently turned out at the Air National Guard Paint Facility in Sioux City, Iowa.
In a departure from standard tactical two-tone grey, the Blacksnakes of the 122nd Fighter Wing conceptualized the sleek design in order to commemorate 100 years of aviation in the Indiana National Guard.
Indiana’s two Air National Guard units, the 122nd FW in Fort Wayne and 181st Intelligence Wing in Terre Haute both have a long history of flying single seat fighter aircraft in the Hoosier State. The creators of the design venerated both the Blacksnakes of the 122nd FW and the Racers of the 181st IW as part of the A-10 paint scheme. ....
