COVID-19 prevention efforts cost the owner of a Wawa-area gold mine about $3 million in 2020.
Wesdome has also brought another accommodations trailer for its workers to encourage social distancing at its Eagle River Complex, about 50 kilometres west of the community.

No one at Wesdome sites have tested positive for the virus.
Social distancing efforts “definitely had an impact” on the company’s costs and exploration efforts, said president and chief executive officer Duncan Middlemiss during a conference call with analysts on Thursday.
“2020 was not without its challenges,” he said. “2020 was a year nobody expected.”

Gold production at a Wawa-area mine fell slightly compared to 2019.
Wesdome’s Eagle River Complex produced 90,278 ounces last year compared to 91,688 ounces in 2019.

Eagle River Underground contributed 87,560 ounces, or 97 per cent of total production in 2020, Wesdome says. Mishi Open Pit produced 2,718 ounces.
Fourth-quarter production stood at 20,006 ounces. Most, 19,667 ounces, came from Eagle River Underground.
“Q4 production was negatively impacted by mechanical downtime associated with the cone crusher in the mill and underground geotechnical challenges affecting the grade performance in one stope,” Wesdome says.
