Eagle Creek Trail reopens following January rain storms

Updated: 6:25 PM PDT July 1, 2021 CASCADE LOCKS, Ore. The Eagle Creek Trail and recreation area reopened July 1 following a rain storm that led to landslides throughout the Columbia River Gorge back in January. Volunteers spent more than five months repairing and cleaning up the trail. The U.S. Forest Service worked with volunteers from the Pacific Crest Trail Association to remove dozens of downed trees and debris from the trail and trailhead. The U.S. Forest Service also spent 200 hours rebuilding a large crib wall, or retaining wall. A contractor removed an estimated 4,000 cubic yards of debris that slid down the mountain and blocked the entrance to the trail.

Historic Columbia River Highway reopens, with access to Gorge waterfalls

PORTLAND — A section of the Historic Columbia River Highway that has been closed since January has reopened to the public, the Oregon Department of Transportation announced this month, granting access to one of the most scenic drives in the region as well as several waterfalls that have been off-limits all spring. The six-mile closure between Bridal Veil and Ainsworth State Park was caused by recurring landslides triggered by heavy winter rainstorms, exacerbated by damage done to the landscape by the Eagle Creek Fire in 2017, officials in the Columbia Gorge said. The closure blocked access to the Wahkeena and Horsetail Falls trailheads on either side of Multnomah Falls, as well as the Oneonta Trailhead that had been closed since December due to another landslide. All three of those trailheads are now back open, ODOT said.
