The draft guidelines for the reopening of schools for the upcoming 2021/2022 academic year by the Ministry of Education suggests students may have the choice of virtual or physical classes come September, depending on their circumstance.
The document, obtained by Newsday, was given to stakeholders on Friday to review and suggest amendments. Stakeholders met on Monday to consult with the ministry on the document and another meeting is scheduled for Friday.
The draft reflects changes to the current education system suggested by the ministry considering the covid19 pandemic and is not the final product. ....

Ministry: CXC to address problem with literature paper
Education Minister Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly said CXC examinations continue to flow smoothly.
CXC (the Caribbean Examinations Council) will address an issue with the Literatures in English paper, she said.
Speaking to Newsday via WhatsApp message, Gadsby-Dolly said the exams are proceeding well.
“The logistics involved in running CXC exams involving over 39,000 registered candidates with multiple subjects and papers are complex, and from time to time, matters do arise which require action, but up to this time, nothing out of the ordinary has been encountered.”
TTUTA president Antonia De Freitas said while mostly positive reports have been received, an issue had come up with one subject. ....

THE EDITOR: Open letter to Minister of Education Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly.
I am writing to request that the time allotment for the SEA creative writing examination (50 minutes) be reviewed and reconsidered.
As many are aware, the SEA exam is already a stressful and anxiety-inducing situation for most children. The time limit for each exam inevitably adds to this pressure, though I understand that there must be some sort of reasonable time parameters.
With that said, there has been a reduction in the number of items for the language arts and mathematics paper given the setbacks that the pandemic has brought. However, I am left baffled as to why students are still only being given a mere 50 minutes to plan, write and edit an elaborate, detailed and advanced five-paragraph essay. ....
