Cars torched, windows smashed at Portland Public Schools HQ
Multiple school district vehicles were burned, according to a statement from Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero.
Portland Public Schools administrators were roused early Saturday, March 6, following overnight reports of vandalism and burned-out cars at the public school district s headquarters at 501 N. Dixon Street.
According to a statement from Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero, several food delivery trucks and maintenance vans were destroyed. Fresh graffiti and smashed office windows were also reported. Police said two cargo vans and a one box truck went up in flames.
While I am relieved that no one was hurt and there was no further damage to the building, this malicious act of arson and property destruction last night was criminal and it has no place in our community, the superintendent said in a statement. This was an attack on our city s public school system. ....

Renamed Tumwater Middle School honors Chinuk Wawa language
The Beaverton School Board decided on the name at its Tuesday, Feb. 22 meeting.
The Beaverton School Board has selected a name for a new middle school located in the Cedar Mill area.
On Monday, Feb. 22, the board unanimously decided on the name Tumwater Middle School for the school located on Northwest 118th Avenue, which has been previously referred to as Timberland. The district solicited input from the overall community, including a Native American parent group and various tribal partners, according to Beaverton School District spokesperson Shellie Bailey-Shah.
Tumwater means waterfall in the Chinuk Wawa language. The language, also called Shawash-Wawa, originated at the mouth of the Columbia and spread throughout the Pacific Northwest, according to Lane Community College. It served as a language of exchange and trade for tribal and non-tribal people. ....

Portland schools report higher graduation rates despite pandemic

Oregon Department of Education says state s lax guidelines in 2020 had little impact on spiked rates.
Oregon education officials are celebrating an increase in the overall on-time graduation rate during the 2019-20 academic year.
Across Oregon, the graduation rate climbed from 80% in 2019 to 83% in 2020.
In Portland Public Schools, the graduation rate jumped to nearly 84%, up from 80.5% the year prior, making it the highest rate for PPS in the last decade.
Within Oregon s largest district, nearly all student groups showed a jump in on-time graduation rates. Rates for Latino students jumped by four percentage points, while Black students saw a five-percentage-point increase in on-time graduations. ....

Suburban and rural school districts across several counties plan a return to class in some limited way within weeks.
School and not the kind that takes place on a screen will be back in session in weeks, if it hasn t started already, across the region.
Portland Public Schools is planning on bringing some students back into school buildings beginning as soon as Monday, Jan. 25, staring with 16 elementary schools and two high schools.
We re aiming for a start of Jan. 25, said Shawn Bird, chief of schools.
The 16 elementary schools will focus on the youngest students, those in kindergarten through 3rd grade, district officials said at a school board meeting Tuesday Jan. 12. The first schools will be ones with child care on-site and schools where more students struggle to achieve. ....
