These have accompanied global shifts in people s lifestyles and rapid changes in the environment, both natural and man-made. An unfavorable consequence of these alterations has been the increasing burden of cancer on human society. As the country with the largest population, China has borne this burden heavily. Despite the massive progress China has made in healthcare since the 1950s, cancer has become the leading killer in the country. In 2015, nearly 2.4 million lives were taken by this disease. Cancer lies latent for years before it manifests; so perhaps, its burden will only continue to grow in the coming decades. ....
ANN ARBOR, Mich. â A lot can happen in a month. At the end of January, 56-year-old Cadillac resident Paul Sackett underwent a series of procedures at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor to replace his liver. Paul has primary sclerosing cholangitis cirrhosis of the liver â a rare condition that prevents his bile ducts from working properly. Without a transplant, he might have had only a few years to live, or less, depending on the progress of the disease. On Jan. 28, the hospital called Paul to let him know they had a liver ready for transplant. During the transplant operation, Paulâs wife, Michelle, said some complications arose when surgeons noticed some excessive blood loss. ....
